Course Description:

This course is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of acting for film and television. Students will learn essential acting techniques, character development, and on-camera skills necessary for a successful career in the entertainment industry. Through practical exercises and scene work, students will gain hands-on experience in portraying characters authentically on screen.

Course Objectives:

1. Understand the differences between acting for stage and acting for film and television.
2. Develop basic acting techniques, including voice, movement, and emotion.
3. Learn how to analyse scripts and develop characters for on-screen performances.
4. Gain experience in performing scenes for camera and receiving feedback.
5. Explore the professional aspects of working as an actor in the film and television industry.

Introduction to Acting for Film and Television

• Understanding the differences between stage and screen acting

Basic Acting Techniques

• Voice and speech exercises
• Movement and physicality in acting
• Emotional expression and character development

Script Analysis and Character Development

• Breaking down a script for character analysis
• Developing a character’s backstory and motivations
• Creating authentic performances for the camera

On-Camera Acting Skills

• Understanding camera angles and blocking
• Performing scenes for camera with focus on subtlety and authenticity
• Receiving feedback and adjusting performances accordingly

Audition Techniques

• Preparing for auditions in the film and television industry
• Cold reading exercises and audition etiquette
• Mock auditions with feedback from instructors

Professional Development

• Understanding the business side of acting
• Building a professional actor’s toolkit (headshots, resumes, demo reels)
